MPlayer 0.90

I downloaded the recently released MPLayer 0.90 last week.

You also have to download a number of codecpacks, if you want to play Windows Media, RealPlayer, or even Quicktime (!) movies. I don’t know how long MPlayer has had Quicktime support, but it seems to work very well now. There is (almost) no need for CodeWeavers’ CrossOver Plugin anymore.

I also compiled MPlayer with GUI, OSD menu, XMMS inputplugin, and aRts sound support. For the GUI, you can download numerous skins (you need at least one). For the On Screen Display menu, and for subtitles, you will have to download a font package.

When properly configured, you get a really nice media player. As a matter of fact, right now, I am listening to the radio (online), simply with

mplayer http://www.skyradio.nl/player/skyradio.asx

although it says on the Sky Radio site, they recommend the latest version of Windows Media Player! :-)

And at home, I already had Windows Media (.wmv) movies, that did not play in Windows, but did in Linux!

Yes, you guessed right, I am really pleased with the new MPlayer.
Unfortunately, it does crash sometimes, and occasionally, it even completely restarts my X Windows (although I am not sure if that is a MPlayer or a NVidia problem).

  1. Are you also going to post that list of URLs of “Windows Media” radio stations that you compiled, or are you leaving that “as an exercise to the reader”?

  6. RTFM. :) The mplayer documentation has more details about the http_proxy URI prefix and the -user and -password switches. Go read it. Don’t forget to use your Google.

  11. I have never been able to get the -user and -passwd switches to work.
So far the only way I have been able to get mplayer through an authenticating proxy is to tunnel a connection via the mac on my other desk, which is running AuthOxy (which badly needs to be ported to Linux).
