DVD writer
Who needs standards?
There are three different formats for writable DVD’s, DVD+RW, DVD-RW and DVD-RAM. For more info about the differences, take a look at this site, for example.
So, the big problem is of course, if you want to buy a dvd writer, which format should you choose? The one may be technologically more advanced, the other more widespread or compatible.
Luckily, it’s no problem anymore: Iomega announced the introduction of their multiformat dvd writer, capable of writing all three formats. Now, that is good news!
Or is it? This does mean, there is less need for one real standard for (re)writable dvd’s. It is nice that you can write all formats, but incompatibilities between the different types of discs, and with stand-alone players will remain of course.
By the way, how do you describe this dvd writer?
Long ago, you used to have a double speed, or 8 speed cdrom player.
Now I have a 16x48x dvd player and a 48x12x48x cd rewriter in my computer.
But this new writer from Iomega, is that a 24x16x32x4x2.4x4x2x3x dvd rewriter?
