DHCP server has died?
Two weeks ago, I wrote that I couldn’t get DHCP to work in Debian. I am convinced by now, that it’s not me, nor Debian, nor my configuration of Debian, it’s just the modem/router.
I tried to connect my laptop, running Windows XP, and I did not get an IP address. Yes, I did check the “Obtain IP address automatically”-checkbox! Can it be any easier than that?
The built-in DHCP server of the SMC 7204BRA router just seems to have died after handing out 2 IP addresses. I cannot think of any other explanation…
My laptop has arrived
My laptop has been delivered yesterday!
It has taken quite some time, because the laptops were held back at the customs for a few weeks. As a compensation De-Laptopper offered a choice of a few free accesories. I chose the free upgrade from 2*256 MB to 1*512 MB of memory (which I had ordered anyway for 49 euros).
Unfortunately, they still have to deliver the upgrade from 11 Mbps (802.11b) to 54 Mbps (802.11g) WLAN.
Furthermore, they’ve only given me 256 MB of memory, so they still have to send me the 512 MB DIMM.
And finally, because the 7200 rpm 60 GB harddisk wasn’t available, they put a 5400 rpm in instead. But they upgraded the processor from 1.6 to 1.7 GHz! So now I have to choose: 1.6 GHz processor with a 7200 rpm drive, or 1.7 GHz with a 5400 rpm drive? Does anyone have any good suggestions what to choose?
DHCP in Debian
Why doesn’t my DHCP client work in Debian?
I’ve got my ADSL connection working alright in Windows, but of course I want to get it to work with Debian also (dual boot on the same machine).
In Windows I’ve checked the “Obtain IP address automatically” checkbox, and it all works fine. My modem / router hands out the IP address 192.168.1.3. Great! But when I boot Debian, I get no response from the DHCP server whatsoever.
Google tricks
A while ago, I posted an entry about google bombing.
Well, here is something weird, is it google spoofing? Does anybody know?
Try this:
Search google for sw 53 Switch ABCD. The first 49 (!) hits are all similar pages, containing a link to Digital Revolution.
Stinkin’ viruses
In the last 5 days I have received 6 virus emails! (Update: 15 emails and counting!)
I don’t use Outlook at home, and I use Linux at work, so it wouldn’t bother me at all. Futhermore, our mailserver runs F-Prot Antivirus on all incoming mail, but still… it’s pretty annoying!
