DHCP server has died?

Two weeks ago, I wrote that I couldn’t get DHCP to work in Debian. I am convinced by now, that it’s not me, nor Debian, nor my configuration of Debian, it’s just the modem/router.

I tried to connect my laptop, running Windows XP, and I did not get an IP address. Yes, I did check the “Obtain IP address automatically”-checkbox! Can it be any easier than that?

The built-in DHCP server of the SMC 7204BRA router just seems to have died after handing out 2 IP addresses. I cannot think of any other explanation…

  1. Uhm, perhaps a firmware reset or maybe an upgrade?

  3. Well, yes, that sounds like a good idea… but please let me know where I can download firmware for the SMC 7204 BRA, if it’s not on the SMC site!

Check out http://www.smc-europe.com/ and click Products -> Broadband.
Now if you look for the “Broadband & ADSL Catalogue” pdf, and you go to page 2 of this pdf, you will find my modem/router on the right. But that’s all I can find on that site:

    “Search results
No matches were found for ’7204′”

  5. If you go into support \ downloads part of smc-europe.com and input your part number (751.7664 for mine SMC7204BRA) you’ll get to the only firmware update that exists…

this router is cheesy! (I really hate it).

Hope it can help you out on your problems.
