Strip

Instant Messengers, webmail accounts, subscriptions to mailinglists, different computers and online shops.

Do you know what these have in common?

They all need accounts, and each account needs a password.
Do you get what I’m hinting at? Are you familiar with that problem?

I installed a program a few years ago, to keep track of all my accounts and passwords. I’ve got a program on my desktop computer, and one (“Strip”) on my pda. And I’m glad I have! Yesterday I was browsing through my accounts and was amazed by the huge number: I have about 74 of them!

Just to mention a few:

  • Instant Messengers: AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo, Jabber (twice).
  • Webmail: gmail, hotmail, netscape, zonnet, and the one from work.
  • Computers: Linux on my desktop (two accounts), Linux on my laptop (two accounts), Windows on my laptop, my pda, my adsl modem/router, my wireless access point, other people’s computers, at work or of friends.
  • Online shops: bookshops amazon, bol.com and proxis; easyjet and freerecordshop.
  • Other websites such as forums or newspaper sites.
  • Then there are the accounts for administering my own domain bvrolijk.net.
  • There are passwords for my weblog, my wiki, and some of the pages in my photo gallery.
  • … and many more!
