Right now, (it’s Thursday 21 Aug, 2008, 13:37 CET), the ladies are playing the water polo final at the Beijing Olympics. The Netherlands are playing the United States. You can see it live at http://os2008.nos.nl/.

But when I looked at Wikipedia just now, I found something interesting:

Apparently, the Dutch have already won!

(As you can see in the image, the score is 5-5 at the time of the screenshot, but on the Dutch Wikipedia page, it says the Dutch have won the gold medal in the final against the US!)

A friend of mine pointed me to this website, The Daily WTF, Curious Perversions in Information Technology.
On this website you can get your daily dose of funny, stupid or weird bits of programming code.

How about this bit of code for converting a byte array to hexadecimal?
Notice the use of constants to improve readibility, such as:

public static final int FIRST_BIT_OFFSET = 1;
public static final char ZERO = '0';

Here’s another nice example of the use of constants, to make SQL query building much easier!

This one’s for people who don’t understand boolean logic:

if ((actionFlag == 0) && (actionFlag == 1))
{
...
}

or

if (connectionOpen || !connectionOpen)
{
...
}

or this example, showing the inefficient way of variable assignment:

if ( BitCount != 8 )
expectedBits = 8;
else
expectedBits = BitCount;

One final entry shows the code you need to use, if your < key doesn’t work.

There’s an article about statements in End User License Agreements – you know, the things you should actually read before you click “I agree”. Some companies really want you to agree to the most insane statements. I seriously think that some of these are, in fact, against the law.

How about these examples:

Apple reserves the right, at any time and from time to time, to update, revise, supplement, and otherwise modify this Agreement and to impose new or additional rules, policies, terms, or conditions on your use of the Service. Such updates, revisions, supplements, modifications, and additional rules, policies, terms, and conditions (collectively referred to in this Agreement as “Additional Terms”) will be effective immediately and incorporated into this Agreement. Your continued use of the iTunes Music Store following will be deemed to constitute your acceptance of any and all such Additional Terms. All Additional Terms are hereby incorporated into this Agreement by this reference.

or, in short: We’ll make any changes to this agreement we like, and you’ve just agreed to them.

And how about this:

You agree, if purchasing by credit card or charge card, that you permanently and irrevocably waive any and all right to cause a “chargeback” (that is, a disputed, reversed or contested charge) against this purchase for any reason whatsoever
(…)
You agree that, if you institute such a “chargeback”, it constitutes a material violation of this license
(…)
Therefore, you agree to pay, and Company agrees to accept in compromise, for each chargeback you may issue or directly or indirectly cause to be issued against company, the amount of EIGHT THOUSAND DOLLARS ($8,000.00)
(…)
You expressly confess, in the event of such a “chargeback”, that such chargeback constitutes fraud and confess such fraud. You agree to pay all costs incurred by company or the seller of this license in collecting these amounts.

This afternoon, we got a nice little package in the mail.
Because we ordered ADSL a few weeks ago, we received a free MP3 player. Nothing special, some unknown brand, but still a very nice, 256 MB MP3 player.
That’s not what this entry is about, however. It’s about the user manual…

It seems to me that the manual has been translated from Chinese, via Japanese, Italian, Portuguese, to French, then Russian, back to Chinese, Korean and finally to English. Let me quote (yes, literally) from the manual:

Not need to drive the USB dish function
need not to manage the procedure, can pass the “my computer “directly “can move dish” proceed the document operate, having no need in WIN2000 above system gearing the procedure

Encrypt the dish mode
make use of with the supplementary tool in machine, can be direct to divide the dish as two dishes, combine to encrypt an among those, conceal the space, keep to encrypt the part not been seen from, but conceal the secret

recording/reply to read
can pass the microphone recording and keep to WAV and ACT speech text file of the format, the eligibility chooses the part replies to read or contrast to reply to read

If you’re interested in history and ancient monuments like Stonehenge or the pyramids, and you like fiddling around with numbers, take a look at this site.

It’s about coordinates of these monuments, ancients weights and measures, mathematical constants, and even “monuments on Mars”, such as the famous “Face on Mars”. There are all kinds of relations between all these numbers, or at least – we are led to believe that. It sounds all a bit too far-fetched, if you ask me…

How about this…

Start with the numbers 360 (degrees in a circle) and 60 (minutes or seconds). Multiply these and you get 21600. That happens to be the number of Nautical Miles on the polar circumference of the Earth.

Stonehenge is located at latitude 51 degrees, 10 minutes, 42.3529 seconds North. Now multiply these numbers: 51 x 10 x 42.3529 = 21600.

The longitude of Stonehenge, (relative to the longitude of The Great Pyramid at Gizeh, instead of Greenwich, of course!) is 32 degrees, 57 minutes 28.8173748 seconds. Multiplying these numbers we get 52562.89164, which turns out to be the following product: RAD (in degrees) x Pi x 2 Pi x square root of 2160.

Now, let’s take the radius in Feet, of the Sarsen Circle at Stonehenge: 48.66934411.
Divide RAD (in degrees) by this radius: 57.29577951 / 48.66934411 = 1.177245771. This is exactly the tangent of the precise azimuth-of-orientation of the ‘Avenue’ at Stonehenge: 49.65408598 degrees. This number, in turn, is equal to (e / Pi) x RAD (in degrees): (2.72258992 / 3.141592654) x 57.29577951 = 49.65408598.

Well, it just keeps on going… There are thirteen pages, this was just the beginning of the first one… Just browse through it and see for yourself.

Did you know you could create your own stamps?

At TPG Post, you can have you own picture be printed as a real stamp.

We already tried it a while ago. In fact, we used the stamps for our wedding invitations. It’s really easy, and not very expensive. I think it’s great for special occasions or something…

So, here’s the result:
