gmail turns one
Darn!
Just yesterday, I was pleased to see that I had finally reached 50% usage of my Gmail storage space.

But today, Gmail turns one, and to celebrate that, they’re increasing the storage space for every user!

To celebrate our one-year birthday, we’re giving everyone one more gigabyte. (…) Our plan is to continue growing your storage beyond 2GBs by giving you more space as we are able.
So, unfortunately, I am already down to 45% by now… No, 44%… and dropping.
gmail
Charl was so kind as to invite me for a gmail account!
Of course, I happily accepted!
I’m curious! Charl himself is very enthusiasic about it. I will just have to try and see. Of course, it’s webmail, so that’s a big drawback. And I already have a mail archive – it would be nice if you could import your old mail.
But the 1 gig is nice! That should last for a couple of years, I guess…
I hope…
My current mail archive (since 1996) is 497 Megabytes. But it’s getting more and more every year, of course!
Spam spam spam spam. Lovely spam.
It’s time for another SPAM blog…
I am soooo sick and tired of all the spam I get.
In the last month, I have received 20 (Update: 23) mails about mortgages. The subject is always a five-digit dollar figure, and the body always starts with:
“Hello, I sent you an email a few days ago, because you now qualify for a new mortgage.” Most of these emails are signed by either a Steve Morris, or a Jamie Higgs.
In the past 10 days I have received 6 (Whoops: 9) emails, about various things (medicines, mortgages and software), all with a subject starting with “*****SPAM*****”. At least, these are easily recognizable!
In the past month, I got 7 (No: 14) spam mails with a subject “Get $200 bonus at our Casino!”. Seven almost identical emails, only the links were different. And all were signed “Best regards, Jamie Zawinsky”. F*CK YOU, Jamie Zawinsky!
In the past month, I got 16 (I mean: 20) (almost identical) emails, guaranteeing me, in the subject, that I could “Lose up to 19% weight”.
You can “Get the facts about all-natural Adipren720: http://adipren1[0-3].com”.
Remarkably, all these emails end with a very useful bit of
“—- system information —-
internationalized case note years implement respect similar works
stroke-radical Services directories its problem the corresponding Scenario
can version Results: than Tax User should any”
or similar…
BTW, June was the month of “Powerful weightloss now available for you.” in the subject. In 15 days, I received 11 of those mails. The contents were similar to the ones above, and the links refered to either http://[1-3]adipren.com or http://diet[45]0.com.
On the positive side, I don’t receive so much SPAM anymore about Viagra, penis enlargments or porn sites, but that seems to be a trend, according to the BBC.
More stinkin’ viruses
AARGH!
In the last week, I have received 5 emails containing the Worm.SomeFool.Z virus!
A few weeks ago, I already got 3 emails with the Worm.SomeFool.P and Worm.SomeFool.Gen-1 viruses.
I say I received the emails, but that’s not true, of course. Instead, I was notified by the mail server that emails containing those viruses were sent to me but were intercepted by the viruschecker. That’s it.
As I’ve said before, it probably wouldn’t bother me much if I did get the virus, but still, I’m glad we have this virus scanner running on the mail server.
BTW, can anybody tell me why I cannot find anything about a SomeFool virus on the websites of Symantec Security Response or McAfee Security?
Update (May 24): I haven’t been able to read my mail for 4 days. I had 23 new messages just now, 5 of them were SPAM, 11 were viruses (the same Worm.SomeFool.Z) and one was a delivery failure notification of a mail I haven’t sent (let me guess: a virus?).
Stinkin’ viruses
In the last 5 days I have received 6 virus emails! (Update: 15 emails and counting!)
I don’t use Outlook at home, and I use Linux at work, so it wouldn’t bother me at all. Futhermore, our mailserver runs F-Prot Antivirus on all incoming mail, but still… it’s pretty annoying!
More SPAM
I got a nice piece of fraudulent SPAM once more, just as last time a spoofed email, requesting personal or sensitive information, this time pretending it was sent from eBay.
The email looked like this:

Note: this is not a screenshot I made, this image is just the attachment sent with the email.
The best ANTl-SPAM software for you
I suppose you all get SPAM mail from time to time. Maybe just once a week (wow, you’re lucky!), or maybe more than once a day.
Anyway, you probably all know the emails advertising for Viagra, penis enlargements, university diplomas, domain names or web site logos, or simply “to start earning money”.
Netiquette
People that use MS Word to write their emails should be shot!
Once in a while I get messages like that, for instance as part of a mailing list.
Such an email message is normally a “multi-part message in MIME format”. The first part is the normal plain text version of the email, and the second part is the HTML / XML version. (Sorry, I don’t mean “HTML”, of course, I mean “MS’s definition of HTML”!)
