For our honeymoon we went to Greece for two weeks. We flew via Athens to Thessaloniki. There was a rental car waiting for us at the airport. The first ten days we stayed in an appartment on the “Olympic riviera“, which is the area along the coast, near Mount Olympus.

During these ten days, we made some walks, swam in the sea, visited a castle and a nice old Greek village.
We visited Dion, the ancient city of Zeus, at the foot of the Olympus, with the ruins of an ancient village.
We made one very long and very tiring walk up Mount Olympus, from the starting point at about 1100 meters up to a cabin at 2100 meters. You could stay there for the night and walk to the summit (at 2917 meters) the next day. We returned to the car, however; it took us about 7 hours in total.

We visited the spectacular rock formations at Meteora. These rock formations are famous for the monasteries that are built on top. These are hundreds of years old. There used to be about twenty, now there are only six left, but they’re all open to the public. The rocks are really amazing, but the fact that monks decided to build monasteries on top, is just incredible!

At the end of the ten days, we returned (by car) to Thessaloniki, flew back to Athens and stayed there for another five days. We stayed in a hotel near Omonia Square, very close to the center of the city. We could walk to the Acropolis, which, of course, we did quite a few times. We’ve seen all the main tourist attractions: the Acropolis, the Tempel of Zeus, the Ancient Agora, the Roman Forum, but also the National Archaelogical Museum. The last day we went to Piraeus, to visit the (three, all natural) harbours.

Last Sunday, we got up very early, to get back to the airport. We had a good trip home, after two weeks of great weather in a beautiful country… it was a perfect honeymoon!

As you may have known, read, heard or guessed, Irene and I have got married on May 20.

It was a beautiful day.
There were so many people, the weather was really great, and everything was just perfect (a big “thank you” to our best man and woman!)… and we got lots of presents! 🙂

The photo shoot in the morning was a great deal of fun. And yesterday evening, only 3 weeks later, we got the photo album from the photographer. He did a great job! Another big “thank you” to Fotostudio Aster Oostkapelle.

The wedding ceremony was in Veere, Zeeland. A picturesque little town, with a beautiful old city hall. The old windmill and the harbour and lake side were very nice for the photo shoot.

The reception, dinner and party were in Rotterdam in the Zuiderparkrestaurant Meerzicht. A very good restaurant at a great location. Again a big “thank you” to them!

All in all it was just a perfect day! We are so happy that so many people came to celebrate our wedding together with us, and that so many of them spent enormous amounts of time to make this day to what it was.

Back from Brixen

This morning we returned from our wintersport holiday in Brixen, Austria.

We had a great week, did a lot of skiing, met some nice people in our hotel, and took a few hours of private skiing lessons. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t very good. Snow (almost) every day, misty up in the mountains, so very difficult skiing conditions. But that didn’t stop us, of course. Apart from two or three lifts, we used every single lift in the area. See here for the card. The area is very nice, and pretty large with about 250 kilometers of piste and over 90 lifts.

Yesterday, our last skiing day, we met up with a girlfriend of ours (and her brother) who arrived with the same bus, that we took back home that evening! And they brought some great weather with them. Our last day was perfect, sunny – we even had lunch outside – and a lot of fun with the four of us.

On a side note, just before we left last week, we booked our honeymoon. We’re going to Greece for two weeks. When? Well, after our wedding of course. The date? May 20, just like those two zillion other people! Copycats!

Brixen, here we finally come

This afternoon, we will leave on our skiing trip to Brixen im Thale, Austria.

We are very much looking forward to it! According to the website, there’s two meters of snow in the mountains, so that’s good. Now let’s hope for some nice weather.
Check out the live webcams on the site now and again, maybe you’ll see us slide by.

So, this weblog will be rather quiet next week, but you will definitely hear more about Brixen when we’re back! See you in 10 days!

Cha cha cha

It’s been a long time since I’ve taken any sort of exam. And it’s been even longer since I’ve been really nervous before an exam. But yesterday evening I was pretty nervous; because yesterday evening we had to do our dancing “exam”.
Although you probably cannot really fail unless you’re seriously motorically impaired, it’s probably the performing before an audience that is quite scary! 🙂

It was our first joint (and my very first) dancing test. We started taking (beginner) lessons in September, because we will have to do the opening dance on our wedding party, next May.

So, it was pretty nerve-wrecking, but it went (reasonably) well, and we passed! In January, we will continue with the next (advanced 1) course.

Brixen, here we come

This weekend, we booked our skiing trip for next year.

On Friday, February 11, Irene and I will get on the bus to Brixen im Thale, Austria.
We booked our trip online, through GoGo Tours. The arrangement includes the hotel (7 nights, half-board), ski pass for 7 days, and the bus trip.

Well, there’s not much more to say right now. I can tell you more when we’re back, of course.
I can only say that I’m very much looking forward to going skiing again.
And as this will be our first winter sports holiday together, we’re very curious as to how it will go. But we’re both looking forward to skiing together and it will certainly be great!

Ziller- und Tuxertal

This morning (at 05.30), we returned from a short holiday in Austria. We hiked from hotel to hotel, while our luggage was transported for us. We started in Ramsau, in the Zillertal, and walked in 6 days to Hintertux in the Tuxertal, each day walking between 6 and 13 kilometers with up to 900 meters in height difference.
The last day, we ended up on the Hintertuxer glacier, at 3,250 meters above sea level. Very spectacular. And great weather too, as we had on all but one days.

For more info about the trip, check out the site of Aktiva tours, click “Oostenrijk” and then “Ziller- und Tuxertal”, or go directly to the pdf (all in Dutch).
